Soil Management

Soil Types & Earthmoving Decisions

Earthmoving can expose, mix or relocate different soil horizons. What is moved matters as much as where it is moved.

Different soils behave differently

Clay, sand, loam, silt, cracking clays, sodic or saline soils, organic-rich topsoils and exposed subsoils can behave differently when wet, compacted, excavated, carried or spread.

Manage for the crop and location

Crop, climate, drainage, salinity, sodicity, organic matter and management system all influence what a productive soil profile should be. Avoid one-size-fits-all prescriptions.

Machine considerations

Traction, machine mass, tyre loading, moisture, depth of cut, carrying capacity, number of passes and finished surface requirements should be considered together.
